How Fabric is Usually Sold

Most fabric stores sell fabric that has 42 to 44 inches of usable fabric. This is known as the fabric width. If you purchase 1/4 yard of fabric, you would get a 9 inch by 42 or 44 inch piece of fabric.

Fat Quarters offer Versatility

Assuming a standard yard of fabric is 36 inches long by 44 inches wide, a standard one quarter yard of fabric is 9 inches long 44 inches wide. Whereas, a fat quarter is one quarter yard of fabric that is 18 inches long by 22 inches wide. Thus the Fat in fat quarter. A fat quarter dimension is therefore very useful for quilters since it is twice as long as a standard one quarter yard of fabric. A fat quarter dimension provides much more versatilility for many types of projects including patchwork and applique projects.

Fat Quarters are Widely Available

Traditional quilt shops carry fat quarters. These are often offered as coordinated fat quarter bundles which are usually cut from scrap fabric.

Fat Quarters Preserve the Fabric Design

If there is a design in the fabric, you will be able to get the entire design within a single fat quarter. More importantly, the four corners of a fat quarter stretch less than a standard yard of fabric cut from the entire width

Fat Quarters are Compatible with Designs and Patterns

Since many patterns use a 5 inch square block. A standard one quarter yard would allow only 8 squares to be cut, whereas, a fat quarter would provide you 12 5 inch squares.
